Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work

Thursday, April 27th is Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Many of my students have participated in this in the past and I encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the work place. Find a job that you would like to know more about and ask your parents to arrange for you to spend some time observing what they do at their job. If you do go visit a work environment, this is an interview/assignment for you to do while you are there:

Find out the following information as a part of your career investigation:
1. What is the name of the company / business / organization?

2. Give a brief description of the company / business / organization.

3. How many employees?

4. Are there other branches? Are they in Florida? Other states? National? Transnational / Global?

5. Describe what this company / business / organization does.

6. Does the company have a website?

7. What is the URL for the website? (If permitted, look at the company website and describe the type of information found on the website.

8. Describe the job that you "job shadowed" Give examples of the daily responsibilities this person has.

9. Describe some decisions that the person you "job shadow" has to make?

10. What type of technology do you find in the workplace?

11. What are some of the software applications that are used in the workplace.

12. What are the education requirements for the position you "job shadowed?"

13. Describe three things that you leaned from this experience.

14. What are examples of related occupations?

15. Describe something you would like to know more about, based on your observations.

8. First we gathered time sheets, then we added and verified information contained on each. Put hours into the computer for each employee. Verified each employee's data input, then cut paychecks for each employee. After the checks were printed, each time sheet was copied and the oppriate check was mated with it's time sheet. When the paychecks were finished a payroll tax report was ran, my mom let me figure the tax for social security, and federal withholding(941), and also the federal unemployment tax(940). We went www.IRS.gov and linked to the EFTPS website. My mom supervised while I put the appropriate tax amount in the spaces provided.
Then we gathered billing information from the week's timesheets, and created invoices, some were e-mailed, and some were mailed. Then we had to do collection calls. Next my mom ended the day with accounts payable duties

9. What lab we are going to use for our drug testing for the next quarter. Then we started looking at fax machines we want to replace our old fax machine. The next descision that was made was who should be called for collections and who should not. Then we decided what bills needed to be scheduled to be paid.

10. Computers, fax machines, pda's, security cameras, and cell phones.

11. Quickbooks pro 2004,(all applications in Microsoft Office 2003), AOL.
12. Minimum of an AS in Business Admin.

13. You must pay attention to what you are doing. One small mistake can cost a lot of money. How to pay employment taxes.

14. Accounts payable clerk, accounts recieveable clerk, and payroll clerk.

13. That there is a switch that lets you talk to people on different computers. If something goes wrong you have to reboot it and then fix the problem. The firewall blocks bad things from getting in and let good things go through. Then the other firewall tells you what one is open or not.

Teaching a class is hard work, you have to plan ahead and you need to know the computer.
